Bruins Fall to Sun Devils, 17-7

PASADENA, Calif. โย UCLA lost to Arizona State, 17-7, in a Pac-12 game before a crowd of 56,436 at the Rose Bowl Stadium on Saturday night.

UCLA was unsuccessful on three fourth-down conversion attempts against Arizona State, including two in the second quarter that were in the red zone.

The Bruins trailed by just three points, 10-7, with just over three minutes to play when ASU's Cam Skattebo scored on a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Sun Devils a two-score advantage. The Sun Devils were aided by a pair of UCLA penalties on third down, extending their drive.ย

Skattebo finished the game with 61 yards and one rushing touchdown and 25 yards passing and one touchdown throw. Elijhah Badger had 116 receiving yards for the Sun Devils.

UCLA quarterback Collin Schlee was 11-for-18 passing for 117 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 51 yards. ย

Late in the first quarter, Bruin defensive back Kenny Churchwell III intercepted a pass in the end zone on Arizona State's second possession, the second interception of his career. However, the drive ended with a turnover, and Arizona State kicked a 29-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead at the 7:54 mark in the first half.

A Keegan Jones career-long 38-yard gain highlighted UCLA's next offensive drive, but the Bruins were stopped by ASU on fourth-and-goal at the one. After a Logan Loya 31-yard punt return, the Bruins got back in the red zone on their next possession, but the Sun Devil defense once again stopped the Bruins on fourth down, at the nine.

UCLA's defensive unit forced a second consecutive three-and-out by the Sun Devils and got the ball back with 1:17 left in the second quarter but could not find the end zone before time expired, and the Bruins entered the locker room at halftime trailing, 3-0.

Arizona State extended its lead to 10-0 on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Skateboo to Badger with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter, capping after a 14-play, 99-yard drive over a seven-minute span.

UCLA responded on its second possession of the fourth quarter, marching 59 yards down the field in two minutes to get back to within 10-7 with 9:47 left in regulation. Schlee fired a dart to Loya, who ran a slant route up the middle for a 16-yard touchdown, his fourth of the season.
