
Cooper, Basica Advance in NCAA Women's Doubles Championships

GAINESVILLE, FLA. - In the second day of competition of the NCAA Individual Championships being played at the University of Florida in Gainesville, UCLA's Annica Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) and Amanda Basica (Lomita, Calif.) advanced as a doubles team, but were both eliminated in singles play.
Seeded in the Nos. 5-8 group, the team of Basica and Cooper defeated the duo of Ana Friganovic and Joanne Shortall from New Mexico 6-2, 7-5 in today's second round action. The Bruin team is currently listed No. 6 in the nation and improved its overall record to 25-8 this season. Up next for the tandem is the No. 2 seeded team of Karen Goldstein and Vanessa Webb from Duke at 1:00 p.m. (ET) tomorrow (Wednesday, May 26).
Cooper, a junior, who was seeded in the Nos. 9-16 group and ranked No. 16, was upset in the second round by Aarthi Venkatesan of Georgia (6-4, 6-1). This was the third NCAA singles appearance for Cooper, who finishes the season with an overall record of 27-13 this season.
Basica, also a junior, suffered a 7-5, 6-3 second round loss to Florida's Whitney Laiho, the tournament's No. 7 seed. Tied for No. 100 in the rankings entering the post-season, Basica finished the season with an overall record of 24-13. This was Basica's second NCAA Singles appearance, but her first as a Bruin. She made the NCAA Singles field as a freshman at Florida, but was injured much of her initial season at UCLA last year.
