
Women's Water Polo Falls in Semifinals to Trojans, 5-4

DAVIS, Calif. - Top-seeded Southern California and No.2-seed Stanford advanced to the championship game with semifinal victories Saturday at the 1999 Women's Water Polo Collegiate I Nationals being hosted by UC Davis.
The Trojans (29-2) defeated UCLA, 5-4, getting two goals from Sandra Milicev. The game was tied 3-3 midway through the third quarter before Kellie Clark and Milicev scored less than two minutes apart to give USC the lead. Elaine Zivich scored her second goal of the game for the Bruins (23-10) with 2:22 left, but the Trojans' defense held to preserve the win.
The Cardinal (25-5) also got a one-goal win, edging UC Berkeley, 6-5, behind two goals from Kris Koblik and an eight-save performance from Heather Crary. Stanford held leads of 4-2, 5-3 and 6-4, but each time the Golden Bears (28-6) pulled back within one. Brenna Fleener scored her second goal for UC Berkeley with 1:39 remaining, but Stanford held on for the win.
USC and Stanford will play for the championship on Sunday at 3:30, while UC Berkeley faces UCLA for third place at 2 p.m.
Host UC Davis played its second overtime game of the tournament, but fell 6-5 to San Diego State on a goal by Larisa Baltgavis with 1:12 left in the first overtime. The Aggies will play for seventh-place, facing Hawaii, on Sunday at 11 a.m.
UC Santa Barbara needed four extra periods to beat Hawai'i, 10-9, with Kelly Tiffany getting the game-winner with 1:27 left in the second sudden-death period.
The tournament featured 16 teams from around the nation.
Second-day results at the 1999 Women's Water Polo Collegiate I Nationals being held at UC Davis' Hickey Pool. The championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
