Fifth-ranked Pepperdine, behind a match-high 39 kills by senior George Roumain, outlasted top-ranked and defending NCAA champion UCLA 3-2 Wednesday night before 1,789 at Pauley Pavilion.

The Waves 15-13, 15-11, 5-15, 4-15, 15-11 victory was their second straight at Pauley Pavilion after a 12-year losing streak.

After hitting below .261 in losing the first two games, the Bruins, 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league action, turned their fortunes around and blistered the Waves by hitting .575 and .433 in Games 3 & 4, respectively. UCLA also recorded six team blocks in Game 4 and limited Pepperdine to a .139 attack percentage.

In Game 5 the Bruins hit .048 to Pepperdines .267 average, and Roumain spiked four kills and added a block to provide the winning edge.

Pepperdines victory overshadowed a fine performance by the Bruins Matt Davis, who came off the bench and spiked a career high 11 kills, while hitting .348, and added two blocks. Senior Danny Farmer led UCLA with 23 kills (.514 hitting) and 16 digs. Junior Adam Naeve was the Bruins leading blocker with nine.

Sophomores Scott Wong and Don Killian spiked 16 kills apiece for Pepperdine, which improved its record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play.

The Bruins host Loyola Marymount Sat., Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
