PASADENA, Calif. - The No. 1 men's water polo team won its 13th game in a row this afternoon, defeating No. 5 Stanford, 10-3, in an MPSF game held at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena. Sean Kern and Matt Flesher scored three goals each to lead the Bruins, who improve to 16-2 overall, and are now 6-0 in MPSF play. Stanford drops to 10-9 overall, 2-5 in the MPSF.
UCLA opened the scoring quickly when Kern scored a goal 10 seconds into the game. Stanford answered with a Mark Amott goal, and the Bruins responded with a Flesher score on the next possession. Flesher scored his second goal of the period at 4:28 in an extra man opportunity.
Kern converted a behind the head shot into a goal in the second period to extend UCLA's lead to 4-1. Andy Bailey scored with 2:50 remaining in the half to give UCLA a 5-1 halftime lead.
The third quarter went back and forth without any scoring until 1:25 when Jeff Nesmith converted on an extra man opportunity for Stanford, cutting the lead to 5-2. Dave Parker scored a goal from two meters out 13 seconds later to keep the UCLA lead at four.
A minute into the fourth, a breakdown on Stanford's defense gave 2000 Olympian Kern a breakaway that he easily put past Cardinal goalie Nick Ellis. Kyle Baumgarner scored from the right side at 4:03 to give the Bruins an 8-2 advantage. Todd Snider scored for Stanford a minute later, but Dave Parker sealed the Bruin victory 11 seconds later with a goal. Flesher scored one last goal with 27 seconds remaining in the game to give UCLA the final 10-3 advantage.
The Bruin defense was solid all game, allowing the Cardinal to take four shots in each of the first, second and fourth periods. Brandon Brooks made nine saves for UCLA, while Cardinal goalie Ellis finished the day with six saves.
UCLA will take on Long Beach State on Sunday in an MPSF matchup at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on campus. The game starts at noon.
