WESTWOOD, Calif. - The No. 1 UCLA men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 upset loss at the hands of No. 21 Pepperdine Tuesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, UCLA falls to 5-1 overall, while Pepperdine improves to 6-0.

The day started off on a disappointing note when UCLA lost the doubles point for the first time in the 2000 dual match season. Pepperdine took the first match when Sebastien Graeff and Anthony Ross, ranked No. 2 in the nation, knocked off UCLA's Brandon Kramer and Jong-Min Lee 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. The Waves won the one point awarded for doubles when John Hui and Robert Kendrick bested Lassi Ketola and Chris Sands 8-3 on court No. 2.

UCLA evened the match when Kramer registered a quick 7-6, 6-2 win over Chase Exon at No. 2 singles. Next to finish was court No. 3 where UCLA's Jean-Noel Grinda, seeing his first dual-match singles action of the season, lost to Graeff 6-4, 7-5. Pepperdine took a 3-1 advantage after Ross beat Ketola 6-2, 7-6(5) on court No. 4.

The Waves clinched the upset when Alastair Garland knocked off UCLA's Chris Sands 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Although Pepperdine had already won the dual-match, two singles matches were still in progress. UCLA's Jean-Julien Rojer made the score 4-2 after he beat Stefan Suter 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on court No. 5. Last to finish was court No. 1, where Robert Kendrick outlasted UCLA's Lee 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, giving Pepperdine the 5-2 victory.

The Bruins will take their first road trip of the 2000 dual match season next week when they meet T-74 UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 12 at noon.
