WESTWOOD, Calif. - The second-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated No. 3 UCLA, 9-7, in women's water polo Sunday at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
UCLA came out strong early on with freshman Jenny Lamb sparking the Bruin offense after she scored a goal only 20 seconds into the game. The Bruins then went on to take a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter, but Stanford answered with three goals of its own to bring itself to within one at the half.
In the third quarter, the Cardinal dominated, scoring three goals while holding the Bruins scoreless, to put itself ahead, 7-5, for the first time in the game. UCLA freshman Jessica Lopez fired in a goal early in the fourth quarter to pull the Bruins to within one, but Stanford fought back with two goals of its own to claim the victory.
UCLA was led in scoring by sophomore transfer Kelly Heuchan, while Ali Riddell, Kris Koblik and Julie Gardner led the Cardinal with two goals apiece.
With the win, Stanford improves to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF, while UCLA drops to 16-3 overall and 4-1 in MPSF action. All three of UCLA's losses this season have come at hands of Stanford.
The Bruins take to the pool again next Sunday when they host UC Davis at 4 pm at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
