Senior two-meter Alfonso Tucay (Sr., Burbank/Burroughs) scored three goals in each of UCLA's two victories on the first day of the annual NorCal men's water polo tournament at Avery Aquatics Complex.
The second-ranked Bruins, now 7-1 overall this season, defeated No. 17 Air Force in the first match, 13-5. UCLA then pulled away from Long Beach State and topped the sixth-ranked 49ers, 10-8.
Sophomore driver Albert Garcia (So., Long Beach/Wilson) matched Tucay's hat trick in the opener and added two scores in the nightcap. Freshman Brett Ormsby (Fr., El Cajon/Valhalla) scored three times against Long Beach State to cap a four-goal day, while freshman goalkeeper Joe Axelrad (Studio City/Harvard-Westlake) completed his first collegiate start in net with five saves against Air Force.
By winning its group, UCLA gets a semifinal pairing with USC. The fourth-ranked Trojans, who fell to the Bruins last weekend 7-5, defeated UC Davis and Loyola Marymount to gain a rematch Sunday at 11:45 a.m. The winner plays either Pepperdine or top-ranked Stanford in the championship match, which is slated for 4:45 Sunday afternoon.
