Westwood, CA-In a rematch of last season's National Collegiate Championship final, the No. 2 UCLA Bruins knocked off the No. 3 USC Women of Troy, 13-6, at the Sunset Recreation Center on Friday afternoon. The Bruins move to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the MPSF. The Women of Troy fall to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the MPSF.
Senior captain Coralie Simmons led the way for the Bruins, scoring a season-high four goals and playing tough defense, including two big field saves in the second half. Junior Jenny Lamb scored a season-high, hitting the back of the net three times. Sophomore Jessica Lopez added two goals for the Bruins. Senior Kristin Guerin, junior Kelly Heuchan, sophomore Robin Beauregard and freshman Thalia Munro all added a goal in the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Hipp had six saves for UCLA.
USC was led by junior Sofia Konoukh, who recorded a hat trick, adding to her team-leading 31 goals. Also scoring for the Women of Troy were junior Sandra Milicev, junior Nina Wengst and sophomore Katrin Dierolf. Freshman Courtney Lee stopped three shots in goal for the Women of Troy.
UCLA jumped out to a quick lead, with Lamb scoring a goal at 6:37 in the first quarter. The Bruins added two more goals in the next three minutes of play to extend their lead to 3-0. Konoukh put USC on the board, with a goal at 3:26 in the first. That was the closest the score would get, as the Bruins scored two goals to USC's one, taking a 5-2 lead into the second period. In the second and third quarter, both teams stepped up the defense, turning the game into a very physical one and making goals for both teams hard to come by. With 4:10 left in the third quarter, goalie Jaime Hipp was ejected, giving USC an opportunity to cut into the Bruins' 8-4 lead. Simmons, though, came up with a big field save to protect the lead. The Bruins put the game out of reach in the final period. After Konoukh scored two quick goals for USC, reducing the lead to 10-6, the Women of Troy were not able to score again. A 4-meter penalty was called against Deirolf and Simmons scored to put the Bruins up by five. In the last two minutes of play, a hard shot by Beauregard from the outside and a 4-meter penalty shot by Munro closed out the scoring for UCLA.
The Bruins return to the pool tomorrow, March 10th, at home against No. 8 Hawaii.
