Bruins Fall to Third Place With Loss to Warriors

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team outlasted Long Beach State, 3-2, Thursday night in a key MPSF match at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins won 30-28, 25-30, 35-37, 30-21, 15-8 in two hours, 21 minutes in front of 723 fans. UCLA raised its record to 8-1 overall, 3-0 in MPSF action. Long Beach State fell to 3-7, 1-3.

Senior Matt Komer led the Bruins with 20 kills (.366) and eight block assists, followed by sophomore Chris Pena's 13 kills (.320) and team high 11 total blocks. Junior Cameron Mount added 14 kills, nine digs and seven total blocks.

Sophomore Jeff Wootten led The Beach with 20 kills, but was held to a hitting percentage of .125. Scott Touzinsky added 17 kills, but hit just .175.

The Bruins won the match by out-blocking the 49ers, 23.5-16.5 and holding The Beach to negative hitting percentages in Games 4 & 5.

Next match for the Bruins will be Sat., Feb. 2 at UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
