UCLA Defeats BYU in Four Games

The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team defeated No.4 BYU Thursday in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins (14-2, 9-1) won 25-30, 31-29, 30-26, 30-23 in two hours and five minutes in front of 1,158 spectators.

BYU fell to 10-3 overall 8-3 in MPSF play.

Junior Scott Morrow led the Bruins with 17 kills (.556) and four block assists. Senior Matt Komer added 16 kills (.333) six digs, two block assists and an ace. Junior Cameron Mount recorded 14 kills, six digs, two blocks and an ace.

Senior Joaquin Acosta led the Cougars with 20 kills (.350) and 12 digs. Three other BYU players added 11 kills.

In the pivotal second game, the Bruins rallied from an early four-point deficit to tie the game at 14-14 after a BYU hitting error and a kill by UCLA setter Rich Nelson. At 28-28, BYU took the lead on a kill by junior Luka Slabe to force game point. But the Bruins tied it on Morrow's kill and took the lead on another kill by Mount. A BYU hitting error gave the Bruins the game.

The victory enabled the Bruins to snatch first place from Hawaii (9-3, 6-1), which lost at home Wednesday to Long Beach State.

The Bruins and Cougars will meet again Sat., Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
