LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team closed out the 2004 regular season with a 5-3 loss to No. 2 Stanford at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Bruins are now 20-4 overall and 9-2 in the MPSF and will be seeded third at the MPSF Championships.
Stanford got on the board first after eleven seconds had elapsed in the first period and would extend their lead to 2-0 with another goal at the 4:33 mark. However, UCLA would answer with goals by Lauren Heineck and Kristina Kunkel knotting it at 2-2 after one period. The second and third periods would be defined by defense as the Bruins held the Cardinal to one goal in each period, but would be unable to score themselves. Entering the final period Stanford held a 4-2 lead and would score one more goal with 1:32 left to put the game out of reach. A Katherine Belden goal with fifteen seconds remaining would be too little too late as UCLA saw its eleven winning streak come to an end with the 5-3 defeat.
Goalkeeper Emily Feher finished with four saves.
The Bruins will head to Los Alamitos on April 24 for an exhibition game against the United States National Team at 1:30 PM. UCLA will then return to Los Alamitos, the following week for the MPSF Championships, which run from April 30 to May 2.
