Schofield Advances to Plaform Final at U.S. Diving Open

Freshman Tess Schofield notched her first collegiate win as a Bruin with a victory on the platform (212.85) to lead the No. 7 UCLA swim and dive team in Athens, GA on the final day at the Bulldog Invitational.

Schofield led a trio of divers with top-10 finishes on Sunday, as Schofield finished first, freshman Brittany Hill placed third (204.70) and junior Sara Clark was seventh (186.40).

In swimming action, the Bruins had several top-5 finishes on the final day of competition as senior Kim Vandenberg picked up the first NCAA "A" qualifying time for the Bruin team. Vandenberg placed second in the 200 Fly in a time of 1:56.11, automatically qualifying her for the NCAA Championships next March.

Junior Katie Nelson also had a second-place finish on Sunday, swimming 16:27.43 ("B" qualifier) in the 1650 Freestyle. In the 100 Freestyle, freshman Anna Poteete finished fourth in a "B" time of 50.12. Junior Katie Arnold placed sixth in the 200 Back (1:59.82, "B"), while freshman Madeleine Stanton finished ninth (2:01.36, "B").

Junior Jeana Fuccillo placed fourth in the 200 Breast (2:17.62, "B"), while senior Shellene Catalano was seventh (2:20.24). Junior Isabel Miesner finished seventh in the 200 Fly (2:01.38, "B") and the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Vandenberg, Arnold, junior Amy Thurman and Poteete placed third in a "B" time of 3:23.67.

This meet concluded the 2005 portion of the Bruins' schedule. The swim team will not be back in action until January 5 when they host Purdue in a dual meet at Men's Gym Pool, while the dive team will return to competition when they head to Bloomington, IN for the Indiana University Invitational January 13-14.
