The UCLA men's golf team was tied for second place after the first round in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship, hosted by Nevada Las Vegas at Southern Highlands Golf Course.

The Bruins posted a team score of 290 (+2) and were tied with South Carolina. Two shots ahead of both teams, leading the field, was Arizona State, which posted an even par round of 288. Oklahoma State was fourth at 292 (+4), followed by Washington at 293 (+5).

Freshman Daniel Im was tied for the lead after firing a 66 (-6). Im's round was highlighted by an eagle three on the par 5 13th hole. He carded a five-under par 31 on the inward nine. Sophomore Joakim Renstrom posted an even par 72 and was tied for 10th place. Sophomore Peter Campbell and freshman Kevin Chappell each posted 76s (+4) and were tied for 48th. Senior John Poucher was tied for 79th after carding an 83 (+11).

Im was tied with South Carolina's Mark Anderson.
