The UCLA swim team opened up the season with a bang as they defeated the Idaho Vandals 171-70 on Friday afternoon. The meet marked the first ever matchup between the two schools as one of UCLA's best male swimmers returned to campus. Tom Jager, who swam for the men's team from 1982-1986, is in his third year at the helm of the Vandal program and was honored during the meet. Former men's coach Ron Ballatore was also honored during the event.

The meet consisted of 13 events as senior Nicolette Teo led the way with three event wins in the 100 (1:09.83)/200 (2:31.14) breaststroke and 100 (59.08) freestyle. Also notching wins were sophomore Isabell Fischer (100 back, 1:04.26), Kirsten Byers (100 fly, 1:04.36), Ellen Brooks (800 free, 9:05.79), Anna Poteete (50 free, 26.47), Shannon Hackett (200 fly, 2:20.55) and Madeleine Stanton (200 back, 2:20.55).

Freshmen Emily Bibb (200 free, 2:04.55), Lauren Hall (200 IM, 2:19.58) and Sam Vanden Berge (400 free, 4:27.48) posted the first wins of their career. All three also swam on the winning 800 free relay (8:30.72) with Anna Poteete.

All of the events were short course meters.

Next Saturday, the Bruins will head to Santa Barbara for a three-way meet with the Gauchos and Oregon State.
