The UCLA women's basketball team opened the 2007-08 season with a 81-69 win at Cal State Northridge tonight. Senior forward Lindsey Pluimer led a balanced Bruin attack with 16 points. Four other Bruins also scored in double figures, including three freshmen, as Doreena Campbell totaled 14 points, Nina Earl added 13 and Darxia Morris chipped in with 12. Sophomore Erica Tukiainen scored 10.
CS Northridge led for most of the first 10 minutes of the contest before the Bruins took a 23-21 lead at the 7:47 mark on a Campbell lay up. UCLA still led by two points, 29-27, with 2:20 remaining in the half when it went on a 12-0 run to end the half with a 41-27 advantage. Campbell scored seven of the Bruin points during the run.
UCLA led by double digits most of the second half until the Matadors closed to 70-61 with 3:00 left in the contest. The Bruins responded to the challenge with a Pluimer jump shot to make it 72-61 and then upped to margin to 74-61 on a Campbell jumper after a steal. However, five straight CSUN points cut the gap to eight at 74-66 with 1:07 to play. UCLA connected on seven straight free throw attempts down the stretch to ice the game.
The Bruins will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they play host to Rice University in the home opener against Rice University.
