No. 3 UCLA Tops Stanford, 13-9, to Capture Third Place at NorCal Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Krsto Sbutega scored four goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 4 Stanford, 13-9, and capture third place at the 2007 NorCal Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins (7-1) finished the tournament with a 3-1 mark, including wins over Stanford, Pepperdine and Santa Clara.

Sbutega finished the weekend with nine goals in four games, including one four-goal performance and one-three goal effort.

In Sunday's third-place match against Stanford (3-2), junior Russell Simpkins tallied a season-high three goals, and senior Matthew Jacobs and sophomore Tyler Jemmett each registered two goals. Senior Marco Santos and freshman Clay Jorth also chipped in with one goal each.

UCLA raced to a 4-2 lead after one quarter and extended its margin to 7-4 at halftime. The Bruins owned a 9-7 advantage with one quarter remaining and outscored the Cardinal, 4-2, in the final frame to win, 13-9.

Bruin sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin tallied nine saves and finished the two-day tournament with 21 total stops in the cage. Stanford's Andrew Drake led the Cardinal with three goals in the third-place contest.

UCLA takes on No. 5 UC Irvine in the Bruins' 2007 home opener Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
