The UCLA men's volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Husky Dino Cup Tournament in Calgary, British Columbia.

In the evening match, Calgary swept UCLA 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 in 75 minutes before 583 fans at Jack Simpson Gym. The Bruins defeated Brandon University 3-2 in a morning match.

Against Calgary, senior opposite Ryan Ratelle led the Bruins with 17 kills, freshman Mitchel Johnson added seven and Kent Kraushaar five. Head Coach Al Scates rested his top two outside hitters -- Sean O'Malley and Garrett Muagututia. They combined for 32 kills in the win against Brandon. In addition, freshman opposite Kyle Caldwell added 12 kills (.409).

The Bruins rallied from a 0-3 deficit to defeat the Bobcats16-25, 20-25, 27-25, 18-16. Although they were out-hit and out-blocked, the Bruins served five aces and limited Brandon to a hitting percentage of .278 in the fifth set.

Just one match remains in the round-robin portion of the tournament, with UBC meeting UCLA Saturday morning at 11 a.m. A win for UCLA would guarantee the Bruins a rematch against the Dinos in the Husky Dino Cup final Saturday night.
