Eighth-ranked UCLA defeated conference Division II foe UC San Diego for the 46th time in 47 series meetings Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins won 30-26, 35-33, 30-22 in 93 minutes before 508 spectators. The victory evened UCLA's MPSF record at 2-2 and the Bruins have won three of seven matches overall. The Tritons fell to 1-4, 0-3.

Three UCLA players recorded double-digit kills with freshman Kyle Caldwell notching his first career double-double. Junior Garrett Muagututia led the Bruins with 15 kills (.440), followed by Caldwell with 10 kills (.412), a career-high of 10 digs, an ace and seven block assists. Freshman Thomas Amberg, making his first career start, added 10 kills (.500) and seven block assists. Second-year freshman setter Alex Scattereggia made his first career start and recorded 25 set assists, two block assists and a kill for two points. Senior setter Matt Wade also added 20 set assists.

For the match, the Bruins hit .389 and out-blocked the Tritons, 11-8.

Junior opposite Frank Fritsch led UCSD with 20 kills (.552), followed by 10 kills from sophomore Will Ehrman.

On Wed., Jan. 29 the Bruins will host NAIA power Cal Baptist at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
