IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 1 Stanford in the UC Irvine Invitational's third-place match on Sunday evening at UCI's Anteater Pool. Junior Clay Jorth led the Bruins (12-4) with two goals against the Cardinal (12-1).
Stanford's Travis Noll scored the game-winning goal with 1:20 to play in the fourth quarter, lifting the Cardinal past the Bruins in the third-place match. Noll's goal handed Stanford a 5-3 advantage before Jorth closed the gap to 5-4 with 52 seconds to go in the match.
Stanford built a 4-0 cushion late in the second quarter before UCLA scored three straight goals, the last coming from freshman Griffin White with 1:54 remaining in the fourth to pull UCLA within 4-3.
UCLA senior goalkeeper Chay Lapin registered a season-high 13 saves in the cage.
Stanford took the game's first lead, scoring two goals in the second quarter to assume a 2-0 advantage at halftime. The Cardinal led by a 4-1 margin through three quarters.
UCLA returns to action against No. 4 California in an MPSF match at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center on Friday, Oct. 16. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
