Ninth-ranked UCLA will stumble into the MPSF men's Volleyball playoffs after suffering a sweep to host Stanford Saturday night at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford won 30-23, 30-26, 30-28 in 90 minutes before 860 spectators. The loss dropped the Bruins to 14-16 overall, 10-12 in MPSF play. Stanford raised its record to 21-10, 14-8. The Cardinal also avenged an earlier five-game loss to the Bruins in which it relinquished a two games to none advantage.
The Bruins had no answer for the Cardinal threesome of senior Evan Romero, sophomore Spencer McLachlin and freshman Brad Lawson who combined for 41 kills led by Romero's 16.
Junior Garrett Muagututia led the Bruins with 14 kills (.455), followed by senior Sean O'Malley with 10 kills, two aces and four total blocks. The Bruins outblocked the Cardinal 8.0-6.0 but lost the attack percentage battle .237-.366.
In the first round of the MPSF playoffs, the Bruins will enter as the eighth-seeded team and play top-seeded UC Irvine on Sat., Apr. 25 at 7 p.m. at UCI's Bren Center.
