Six teams were within 10 shots of the lead after the first round at the Battle of the Beach, hosted by Long Beach State and UCLA at Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Coast.

The Bruins posted a team score of 354 (-1) in the six-count-five format and trailed first round leader Oregon State (348, -7) by six strokes. Arkansas was in second place at 349 (-6), followed by San Diego State at 352 (-3). Washington was fourth at 353 (-3), followed by fifth-place UCLA and sixth-place co-host Long Beach State at 358 (+3).

Individually for the Bruins, freshman Mario Clemens fired a 68 (-3) and was tied for fifth place, two shots behind the leaders. Freshman Pontus Widegren posted a score of 70 (-1) and was tied for 13th place. Sophomore Alex Shi Yup Kim carded an even par 71 and was tied for 23rd. Gregor Main added a 73 (+2), and was tied for 38th. Freshman Pedro Figueiredo signed for a score of 81 (+10) and was 84th. Bobby Lange, playing as an individual, was tied for 67th after carding a 77 (+6).

Oregon State's Mike Barry and Deigo Velasquez were co-leaders after the opening round, each posting a five-under par score of 66.

Second round action begins Monday at 7 a.m. PST.
