
Bruins Beat Gauchos in Four

Sixth-ranked UCLA beat No. 8 UC Santa Barbara in four games Wednesday to end its five-match road trip with a 4-1 record.
The Bruins won 30-28, 30-25, 19-30, 30-24 in one hour and 50 minutes before 294 fans in Rob Gym. The victory raised UCLA's overall record to 8-6, 7-4 in MPSF play. The Gauchos, who saw their two-match winning streak snapped, fell to 6-8, 6-5.
Once again senior Garrett Muagututia led UCLA with 18 kills and 21.5 points. He added an ace and three total blocks. Sophomore Jack Polales added 11 kills (.304) and four total blocks for 13.5 points. Senior setter Kevin Ker scored 5.5 points after recording two kills (.667), a pair of aces and two total blocks. He also added 44 assists. Libero Tom Hastings led the Bruins with seven digs.
Defensively, the Bruins held UCSB's Jeff Menzel, the league's leading hitter, to just six kills and an attack percentage of .000. Cullen Irons and Todd Travis led the Gauchos with 11 kills each.
On Fri., Feb. 19, the Bruins return home for an eight-match home stand beginning with a 7 p.m. showdown against No.1 Cal State Northridge, which lost in four at UC Irvine Wednesday.
