
No. 3 UCLA Women's Water Polo Defeats No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 9-3

IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore KK Clark scored a game-high three goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 9-3, in a first-round match at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday. The Bruins (10-3) also received two goals each from sophomore Sarah Orozco and freshman Brooke Martin.
UCLA never trailed in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the match on a goal from junior Megan Burmeister. After UC Santa Barbara (6-6) tied the contest, 1-1, with 4:55 to play in the opening frame, the Bruins received one goal from Martin at the 3:09 mark to lead.
With the Bruins ahead 2-1 after one quarter, both teams' defenses clamped down and held each other scoreless through the remainder of the first half.
UCLA outscored the Gauchos by a 3-1 margin in the third quarter and added four more goals in the final quarter to assume a 9-3 victory. In the third period, Orozco scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 7:18 left in the frame, before Clark found the back of the cage at the 4:37 mark.
UC Santa Barbara narrowed its deficit to two goals with their second score of the day at 4:03. Martin's second goal at 3:40 in the third quarter pushed UCLA ahead by a 5-2 margin.
The Gauchos scored their final goal with 6:56 to play in the match. Ahead 5-3 at that point, the Bruins closed the contest on a 4-0 scoring run to seal the first-round victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Dement registered eight saves for the Bruins. UC Santa Barbara's Ruth Milne totaled eight stops in the cage.
UCLA returns to action against No. 5 Michigan (12-3) at the UCI Invitational on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
