Eighth-ranked UCLA swept No.12 Loyola-Chicago Friday night as legendary head coach Al Scates approached the 1,200 career victory plateau.
The Bruins won 30-16, 30-27, 30-24 in 85 minutes before 376 fans in Pauley Pavilion. The victory raised the Bruins' overall record to 12-9, while Loyola, which began the week undefeated, fell to 12-2.
Additionally, Scates won his 1,197th career match and is now three shy of 1,200 -- a figure no Division I volleyball coach has ever attained.
On this night, senior setter Kevin Ker directed the Bruins to their third victory against a MIVA opponent by quarterbacking the offense to a .429 attack percentage. Ker scored 3.0 points on a kill, an ace and two block assists, and recorded a setting percentage of .582 with 45 assists. He also won his 10th match as a starter.
Hitters Jack Polales and Garrett Muagututia led the spike parade with 14 (.393) and 12 (.474) kills, respectively. Polales added four block assists and Muagututia tied a career-high with four aces. Sophomores Jeremy Casebeer and Thomas Amberg added nine (.533) and eight kills (.487) kills, respectively.
UCLA limited the Ramblers to an attack percentage of .170, blocking 8.0 balls. The hosts also served eight aces and did not commit a reception error.
Mike Bunting led the Ramblers with 15 kills.
The Bruins will break next week for final exams and return to action on Mar. 24 for a non-league match against Grand Canyon in the John Wooden Center.
