BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Cristiano Mirarchi netted a season-high five goals to lead the No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 4 Stanford, 10-9, in the semifinals of the NorCal Tournament at California's Spieker Aquatic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The win propelled UCLA (4-0) into the championship match of the NorCal Tournament against USC, slated for 5:20 p.m. on Sunday.
Senior Ben Hohl scored two goals, while the Bruins each received one goal from senior Jacob Murphy, junior Cullen Hennessy and sophomore Griffin White.
In a close contest, UCLA and Stanford were tied at the conclusion of each of the first three quarters. Each team scored two goals in each of the first and second periods, knotting the score at 4-4 by halftime. Stanford and UCLA traded goals in the third quarter, keeping the score tied at 5-5.
UCLA scored five goals in the fourth quarter to edge Stanford, 10-9.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Mesesan was credited with eight saves in the cage. Stanford's Brian Pingree made four stops in goal for the Cardinal.
