The No. 24 men's track and field team dominated the Tennessee Volunteers in a traditional dual meet on Saturday afternoon in Drake Stadium. The Bruins handily won the meet by a score of 111-50, as UCLA posted 13 event wins and five event sweeps.
UCLA started the day off with a win in the hammer and then capped off the meet with a win in the 4x400m relay as several top notch performances were achieved.
Freshman All-American Alec Faldermeyer started the Bruins off with a victory as he threw a lifetime-best of 207-4 in the hammer. He won the event by over 30 feet and set a new meet record in the process. It was his second win of the season after finishing first at Texas on March 23rd.
The throwers posted sweeps in the javelin, discus and shot put during the meet. Senior Andreas Drbal equaled his lifetime-best in the javelin with a new meet record throw of 198-10 for first-place. Carlo Valdes (197-6) and Matthew Kosecki (194-4) rounded out the sweep. Senior Bo Taylor led the way in the discus as he threw just off of his season-best with a toss of 184-6. Juniors Thomas Nagengast (171-3) and Mark Weber (158-8) finished second and third, respectively. Weber led the sweep in the shot as he was first with a season-best heave of 54-1. Sophomore Nigel Davies was second (51-7.25) and Taylor was third (49-00.25).
Senior Jonathan Clark won both the high (6-7) and triple jump (51-7.25). Junior Taylor Hobson was second in both the high (6-7) and long jump (24-5, season-best).
In the pole vault, senior Greg Woepse equaled his lifetime-best with a big vault of 17-4.50. Based off of the national list heading into the dual with Tennessee, that could be the No.1 mark in the NCAA this season.
On the track, the 4x100m relay tallied a win for the second consecutive meet as Jamal Alston, Karlton Rolle, Maxwell Dyce and R.J. Frasier edged out the Vols by .02 seconds to win (40.19).
In the steeplechase, sophomore David McDonald ran a lifetime-best of 9:07.78 as he easily won by nearly eight seconds. Senior Cory Primm led a Bruin sweep in the 1500m as he won in a time of 3:49.54. Seniors Scott Crawford (3:49.77) and Alex Crabill (3:49.82) rounded out the sweep. Primm also won the 800m in a time of 1:51.16. Crabill ran a lifetime-best in the 3000m to win the event (8:23.23), while sophomore Alec Govi was second in a lifetime-best of 8:27.03.
The 4x400m relay of Brian Law, Karlton Rolle, Maxwell Dyce and David Klarer wrapped up the meet with a win as the foursome crossed the finish line in a time of 3:13.16.
Today's win was the first as a Bruin for head coach Mike Maynard. The Bruins will next host the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational April 7-9. They will then wrap up the home meet schedule with a dual against the Oregon men on Sunday, April 17.
