The men's track and field team took down USC on their home turf on Sunday afternoon in the annual dual meet showdown. Behind multiple event wins and impressive performances, the Bruin men helped give UCLA head coach Mike Maynard his first dual meet win against the arch-rival Trojans. The Bruins defeated USC 89-74, clinching the victory in the second-to-last event of the competition, the 5000m.
In two previous scored meets this season, the end results came down to the 4x400m relay with the Bruins finishing second to Texas in a triangular meet and tying with Oregon, but today there would be no tie as the 5000m results clinched the win for the Bruins.
"I doped out this meet with us winning 82-81," said head coach Mike Maynard. "We didn't have a perfect meet and it probably wasn't even the greatest meet, but we fought until the very end and saw a lot of athletes stepping up. It was a great team effort and we competed well in that regard. I didn't want it to come down to the 4x400m relay and when we locked up the win during the 5k, it felt great."
UCLA posted nine event wins and sweeps in the shot put and discus en route to victory.
Senior Jake Matthews and junior David McDonald started the meet off on a high note as both ran sub-9 minutes in the steeplechase. Both men ran lifetime-bests with Matthews running 8:57.76 to win and McDonald placing second in a time of 8:59.30.
The 4x100m relay then took the track and raced to victory as the foursome of R.J. Frasier, Maxwell Dyce, Karlton Rolle and Randall Carroll edged out the Trojans by .03 seconds to win in a time of 39.94. This was the second straight year the men took home the 4x100m title against the Trojans.
Senior Scott Crawford then added three points in the 1500m with his second-place run of 3:49.52. Sophomore Dominic Giovannoni picked up a point in the high hurdles, finishing third in a timw of 15.27.
In a surprise move, the Bruins put freshman R.J. Frasier into the 400m and that proved successful as he finished a surprising second with a time of 48.11. Sophomores Maxwell Dyce and Randall Carroll then finished second (10.50) and third (10.52), respectively, in the 100m.
Crawford served as the rabbit during the 800m race and helped senior Cory Primm to the No. 12 time in the NCAA this season as he won in a season-best time of 1:48.18. Sophomore Steven Norton finished third with a season-best time of 1:51.74.
Sophomore David Klarer had a big day in the 400m hurdles as he ran nearly a one second PR with his second-place time of 51.45. That mark ranks in the top 25 in the NCAA this season.
Dyce then tacked on another Bruin win as he ran 20.79 into a head-wind. Carroll was third in a time of 21.16.
Junior Nelson Rosario was second in the long jump with a mark of 24-3, while Taylor Hobson was third (24-2.25). Hobson was also third in the high jump (6-9.75).

Taylor also won the discus with a mark of 180-5 as the Bruins also swept that event. Junior Thomas Nagengast was second (175-6), while Weber was third with a lifetime-best throw of 168-2. Senior Jonathan Clark won the triple jump with a mark of 52-6.75 and sophomore Dillon Stucky was third with a lifetime-best jump of 49-7.
After picking up six points in the triple jump, the Bruins only needed one point in the 5000m to win the meet. Senior Alex Crabill (14:44.13) and McDonald (14:53.43) finished first and second, respectively, capturing the dual meet crown before the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay.
