LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team used four fourth-quarter goals to overcome a late deficit and defeat No. 10 San Jose State, 7-5, in an MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sarah Orozco scored the game winning goal with 3:09 left to play in the match
UCLA (14-1, 3-0 MPSF) recorded its eight consecutive victory. Orozco and Emily Greenwood each scored a team-leading two goals against San Jose State (12-8, 0-3 MPSF).
Neither team scored in the first quarter. UCLA led 1-0 midway through the second period on a goal from Gisselle Naranjo. San Jose State answered less than 15 seconds later on a 6-on-5 goal from Anna Natalizio, tying the game, 1-1.
After a 1-1 halftime deadlock, San Jose State jumped ahead just 32 seconds into the third quarter on a goal from Dani Curran. UCLA tied the match, 2-2, on a goal from Hannah Sebenaler with 4:54 left in the quarter.
Natalizio put the Spartans ahead, 3-2, with her second goal of the game at the 4:27 mark in the third quarter. The Bruins once again tied the game with a power-play goal from Greenwood, evening the score, 3-3, with 3:56 left in the quarter.
San Jose State recaptured the lead on a 6-on-5 goal from Katie Buzzetta with 17 seconds left in the third quarter, putting the Spartans ahead 4-3.
UCLA controlled the match in the final quarter. KK Clark scored on a penalty shot, evening the game at 4-4 with 6:15 to play. After Natalizio scored her third goal of the match with 4:25 left, putting San Jose State on top 5-4, UCLA scored three unanswered goals to take the lead for good.
Orozco scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 3:44 left, tying the game at 5-5. She scored the go-ahead goal with 3:09 remaining in regulation. Greenwood added an insurance goal for UCLA with 1:47 left in the match, giving the Bruins a 7-5 cushion.
UCLA goalkeeper Caitlin Dement recorded eight saves in the cage. San Jose State's Meagan Minson was credited with eight stops.
UCLA returns to action against No. 5 Arizona State (15-2, 1-0) on Saturday, March 17. Game time at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center is 1 p.m.
