UCLA Maintains Lead After Second Round of NCAA Regionals

The fourth-ranked UCLA men's golf team was in second place following the first round of the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted by Stanford at the Stanford Golf Course Friday.

The Bruins posted an opening round score of 277 (-3) and trailed first-round frontrunner Oregon (272, -8) by five shots. USC was third at 279 (-1), followed by Washington at 280 (E) and fifth-place Nevada at 282 (+2).

Junior Pedro Figueiredo posted the Bruins' top score, firing a first-round 67 (-3) that put him in a tie for fifth place. Figueiredo had six birdies on his card -- three on the front nine and three on the back -- and three bogeys on the outward nine.

Senior Alex Shi Yup Kim added a 69 (-1) and was tied for 11th place. Junior Mario Clemens posted a score of 70 (E) and was tied for 17th place. Junior Pontus Widegren was tied for 25th after carding a 71 (+1) and freshman Matt Pinizzotto was tied for 77th after signing for a 76 (+6).

The Bruins also had two players competing as individuals: sophomore Anton Arboleda was tied for seventh after posting a 68 (-2) and freshman Jay Hwang was tied for 17th after carding an even par 70.

Fresno State's Rufie Fessler was the first round leader after firing a 65 (-5) on Friday.
