Bruins Honored at UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet

UCLA's top scholar-athletes were honored on May 7 at the Sixth Annual UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet, sponsored by Rose Gilbert in memory of Maggie Gilbert.

Football player Jeff Locke and soccer player Charney Burk were awarded the Scholar-Athletes of the Year as the graduating male and female senior with the highest cumulative GPA.

Locke and Burke were also honored with the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award for making the Director's Honor Roll (3.0 or higher GPA) every quarter they were at UCLA. Also receiving this distinction were Brooke Finley (softball), Taryn Pastoor (women's track and field), Marti Reed (softball) and Isabel Williams (swimming).

Twenty-two student-athletes were named to the All-Academic team, which is comprised of the person from each team with the highest cumulative GPA. The overall GPA of the 2011-12 UCLA All-Academic team is 3.64. All-Academic team honorees were third-year member Locke; second-year team members Ryan Deeter (baseball), Finley, Tyler Trapani (men's basketball), Liz Goodrich (women's track & field), Nick Meister (men's tennis) and Mariah Williams (women's basketball); and first-year team members Jacob Wood (men's cross country), Rachel Butler (women's cross country), Bobby Lange (men's golf), Tiffany Lua (women's golf), Aisha Gerber (gymnastics), Carolina Paini (rowing), Joe Sofia (men's soccer), Burk, Anna Senko (swimming & diving), Courtney Dolehide (women's tennis), Michael Perry (men's track & field), Kendall Partie (men's volleyball), Bojana Todorovic (women's volleyball), Cristiano Mirarchi (men's water polo), and KK Clark (women's water polo).

Football player Jeff Baca and rower Jessica McGuire earned the Courage and Character Award, presented to one male and one female who overcame adversity and hardship to excel in their sport and in the classroom.

The Maggie Gilbert Academic Achievement Award, presented to two senior student-athletes who improved their GPA throughout their years at UCLA and were able to excel in their sport, was presented to men's volleyball player Kyle Caldwell and men's basketball player Lazeric Jones.

Taylor Hobson from men's track and field and Reed were presented the AS2 Success Award, given to one self-sufficient male and female graduating student-athlete who takes advantage of all the opportunities and resources available to them at UCLA and will apply them to the successful futures that lie ahead for them.

Finley and men's water polo player Paul Pickell received the Bruin Leadership Award, presented to two student-athletes who demonstrated leadership on their teams and to the UCLA community.
