Bruins Fall in Five to Rainbow Warriors

Sixth-ranked UCLA was upended by No. 13 Hawai'i Saturday night in five sets in Pauley Pavilion.
The Rainbow Warriors avenged Friday's sweep by rallying from a 2-1 sets deficit. Set scores were 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 in a two hour and 23 minute match in front of 643 spectators. UCLA fell to 9-8 overall, 5-6 in MPSF competition. Hawai'i improved to 5-8, 4-6.
In the conference race, the Bruins are in seventh place and the Rainbow Warriors are eighth.
In Set 5, the visitors raced to a 3-0 lead from which the Bruins would never recover. UCLA called a timeout at that point and managed to tie the score at 4-4 on kills by juniors Spencer Rowe, Robart Page and Gonzalo Quiroga and a Hawai'i hitting error. But the Bruins couldn't overcome their mistakes and called their second timeout after a key ace by the Warriors' JP Marks gave the visitors an 11-8 lead. The Bruins would get no closer than two points in crunch time and Quiroga's hitting error gave Hawai'i the victory.
Quiroga led the Bruins with 21 kills (.381), two aces and 23.5 points. His aces were the only ones for the Bruins, who committed 19 service errors. Page added 17 kills (.382) and 18 points and Rowe hit .778 with a line of 7-0-9.
Marks led Hawai'i with 18 kills, followed by 17 from Brook Sedore and 15 from Sinisa Zarkovic.
On Monday, the Bruins travel to USC for an 8 p.m. match at the Galen Center. The Pac-12 Networks will carry the match live.
