
Men's Volleyball Swept at BYU

Top-ranked BYU swept past the sixth-ranked Bruins in an MPSF Conference contest in Provo, UT on Saturday night. Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-15, 25-23. UCLA now owns a 8-7 overall record and a 4-5 mark in MPSF action. BYU improved its records to 8-2 and 7-1.
In set one, UCLA enjoyed a brief lead at 5-4 thanks to a Spencer Rowe kill. BYU charged back and took a 16-12 advantage and moved it out to 20-17. Kills by Robart Page and Scott Vegas brought the Bruins to within two at 21-19, but the Cougars answered right back to secure set one 25-22.
In set two, the Cougars shot out to a 4-2 lead. A block by John Speraw called another timeout at 19-12. However, the Cougars owned all the momentum and captured set two 25-15.
In set three, a Vegas kill staked UCLA to a 3-2 lead. Gonzalo Quiroga's ace made it 5-3 for the Bruins. BYU came right back and went ahead 10-8. Dane Worley's kill made it 10-9 for the Cougars. Rowe tied the set at 16-all with a back row kill. The score was then even at 19, 20 and 21 points. BYU scored the next two points for a 23-21 margin. A Vegas kill and a hitting error enabled UCLA to tie the set at 23. After a timeout, the Cougars scored the next two points to take the match.
Quiroga topped the Bruins with 11 kills. Rowe finished with nine kills, one block solo and two assists. Steve O'Dell added 18 set assists and two kills. Bannan had 15 set assists and two blocks. Worley had four digs and two aces.
UCLA will return home to face Hawai'i on Friday (Wooden Center) and Saturday (Pauley Pavilion) nights at 7 p.m. Promotions for the UH matches include Club and High School Team Night and Sports Camper Reunion Night.
