18th-Ranked Bruins Post Tri-Meet Victory Against UCSB and BYU

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 18th-ranked UCLA swimming team had the best times in all 14 races on Saturday at UCSB Campus Pool to record a tri-meet victory over UC Santa Barbara and BYU. Seniors Monica Dornick and Noelle Tarazona and sophomore Madison White each won two races, as the Bruins beat the Gauchos 162-96 and the Cougars 171-87.

The Bruins claimed the top two times in the 200 Medley Relay. The quartet of sophomore Linnea Mack, juniors Allison Wine and Katie Kinnear and Dornick won the race with a time of 1:42.57, while the group of White, senior Taylor Carlson, Tarazona and freshman Sarah Kaunitz placed second (1:44.77).

The Bruins had another 1-2 finish in the first individual race, the 1000 Freestyle. Junior Katy Campbell had the best time at 9:56.31, with freshman MK Kish placing second (10:21.79). UCLA had the six best swims in the 200 Free, led by Mack, who had a 1:50.50, followed by Campbell's 1:50.63. Rounding out the Bruin six-pack were freshmen Carly Reid (1:52.06) and Katie Grover (1:52.83), Kaunitz (1:53.63) and Natalie Amberg (1:54.01).

In the 100 Backstroke, White won her first race (55.14), while freshman Marie-Pierre Delisle was fourth (58.01). UCLA made it five in a row to open the meet with a win for Wine in the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:04.02. Carlson was third (1:05.26), while sophomore Brigitte Winkler placed fifth (1:06.76).

In the 200 Butterfly, UCLA had the top four times, with Tarazona winning at 2:02.00. Freshman Anna Quinn was second (2:03.08), followed by senior Kacey Milligan (2:04.38) and junior Madison Applegate (2:06.57). UCLA recorded the first, third and fifth-best times in the 50 Free, with Dornick swimming the fastest at 23.67. Kinnear was third (24.13), while senior Jessica Khojasteh placed fifth (24.50).

Dornick made it back-to-back in the sprints, going 51.50 in the 100 Free, followed closely by Grover's 52.20. The Bruins tallied the top four times in the 200 Back, as White won her second of the meet with a 2:00.43. Kinnear was second (2:03.26), followed by Delisle (2:03.28) and freshman Hannah Grubbs (2:05.99).

In the 200 Breast, Khojasteh recorded the win with a 2:19.49, while Winkler was fifth (2:24.61). Quinn had first-place plaudits in the 500 Free with a time of 5:04.69, while Tarazona followed that with her second Fly win in the 100 (55.80). The Bruins had the second-best time with Applegate (56.05) and the fifth-best mark with Milligan (57.97).

Junior Arlyn Upshaw led the Bruin contingent in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:05.20. UCLA had the four best times in the event, with Mack finishing second (2:08.12), Kish third (2:08.56) and Kinnear fourth (2:09.25). The Bruins closed out the meet with the best time in the 400 Free Relay, as White, Grover, Khojasteh and Mack swam a 3:28.18, while seniors Ally Loper and Courtney Wilde, Carlson and Tarazona were third at 3:32.88.

The UCLA diving team gets their season underway Nov. 7-9 at the Trojan Diving Invitational. The next meet for the swimming team, which will be the first swimming/diving combined meet of the year, will be Friday, Nov. 14 at Spieker Aquatics Center against #10 Arizona at 1:30 p.m.
