No. 3 UCLA Remains Undefeated on the Road with 10-7 Win at No. 7 UCSB

October 26, 2014 | Men's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team (21-2, 5-0 MPSF) remained undefeated in the MPSF and away from home with a 10-7 win at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (9-9, 0-4 MPSF) on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins also improved to 13-0 away from campus, including 5-0 on the road in 2014. With the win, UCLA improved to 98-17-1 all-time against the Gauchos.

The Bruins were led by five players with two goals apiece, including seniors Paul Reynolds and Cristiano Mirarchi, juniors Danny McClintick and Anthony Daboub and sophomore Gordon Marshall.

UCLA jumped out to a 4-0 start at the end of the first period. The Bruins got back-to-back goals from Daboub (7:32 and 5:13). McClintick made it 3-0 (0:49) and then Mirarchi scored a power play goal just before the buzzer to end the scoring in the first.

Marshall made it 5-0 with a 6-on-5 goal (3:34). But UCSB's Kevin Cappon answered with a power play goal to get the Gauchos on the board (3:08). Marshall scored his second on another 6-on-5 opportunity to end the scoring in the first half (2:22) with UCLA leading 6-1 at the break.

McClintick scored his second of the game to open the third (5:12), pushing the lead to 7-1. The Gauchos then trimmed it to 7-3 with back-to-back power play scores before Reynolds made it 8-3 (3:02) to end the scoring in the third.

UC Santa Barbara won the fourth quarter, 4-2, thanks to three power play goals. Overall, the Gauchos were 6-for-16 on power plays. Both were season-highs against UCLA. UCSB also was given one penalty shot, which they failed to capitalize on. UCSB actually closed the gap to 8-6 at the 2:59 mark of the fourth, but Reynolds (2:21) and Mirarchi (1:43) each scored their second of the game to push the lead to 10-6. Chase Racich scored an exclusion goal with 1:09 remaining to provide the 10-7 final.

Danner started in goal for the Bruins and played the entire game, making 10 saves, including one on the penalty shot at the end of the third period. Chris Whitelegge played the entire game for UCSB, which did not keep goalie saves.

The Bruins return to action on Sunday (Nov. 2) when they continue MPSF play while making their final appearance on the Pac-12 Networks at 7:00 p.m. at No. 2 USC.
