
Bruins Win Two Events at SMU Classic

LEWISVILLE, Texas -- The Bruins won two races on the first day of their season-opening SMU Classic, as junior Linnea Mack won the 100 Backstroke and sophomore Maria Polyakova recorded the top mark in the 1-meter.
Last year's Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year Polyakova notched a 301.95 in the event, besting second-place Andrea Acquista of Louisville by 28.70. With the win, the Bruin tallied 16 points for UCLA.
UCLA's freshmen had a strong debut on Friday. Emma Schanz placed third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:16.24, while Caroline McTaggart finished seventh in the 50 Free with a 22.98. Schanz also notched a top-five finish in the 100 Breast.
Other notable finishes from Friday's action include sophomore Katie Grover's third-place finish in the 100 Fly (53.90), Mack's second-place showing in the 50 Free (22.49), and UCLA's fifth-place finish in the 800 Free Relay. Grover teamed with Mary Pelton, Sandra Soe, and Madison White for a relay time of 7:24.70. The Bruins also posted a 3:39.21 in the 400 IM Relay (Mack, Schanz, Katie Kinnear, McTaggart).
The SMU Classic continues on Saturday at AR Barr Pool, in Lewisville, Texas. The Bruins also hit the pool tomorrow in San Diego. Those not competing at SMU will be competing in San Diego, with the exception of Annika Lenz, Éloïse Bélanger, Sarah Kaunitz, Jax Shoults, and Hannah Grubbs.
