LOS ANGELES, -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 13-0 on the year with a 13-6 win at No. 19 Loyola Marymount (3-8) in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at Burns Aquatics Center.
Junior Chancellor Ramirez was one of five Bruins to score two goals against the Lions. Sophomores Max Irving, Alex Roelse, Matt Farmer and freshman Spencer Farrar each scored two goals for UCLA, which improved to 27-0 all-time against LMU.
UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead senior Daniel McClintick hit junior Gordon Marshall at set (7:38) and then Irving scored on a power play (5:47). But LMU responded with back-to-back goals to tie it at 2-2 (4:54, 2:11). Redshirt freshman Warren Snyder then found Farrar, who ended the scoring in the first (1:14) with a counter attack strike to put UCLA in front, 3-2.
Farmer opened the scoring in the second period with a goal at two meters (7:35) to make it 4-2. Dayne Jagga scored on a counter to cut it to 4-3 (6:38), but the Bruins answered with two goals, a front court score by Ramirez (4:07) and a counter by Farrar (1:13) to take a 6-3 lead into the break.
The third period was even with both teams scoring two goals. Junior Ryder Roberts scored on a counter (7:23) and Roelse found the back of the cage from two meters (5:52) to push the lead to 8-3. But LMU rallied to end the period with two goals to cut the lead to 8-5 heading in the fourth.
The Bruins dominated the fourth, outscoring the Lions 5-1 to provide the 13-6 final. UCLA reeled off five in a row by five different players in the final stanza. Farmer scored his second (7:22), then Roelse added his second (6:17), and Ramirez scored his second on a power play (4:39) and Irving registered his second (2:47). Redshirt freshman Kent Inoue ended the run with a goal from the front court (1:01). Neil LeVecke ended the scoring with a goal from the front court with 0:40 remaining..
Danner started in the cage and played the first three periods and the first 0:38 of the fourth, making 14 saves and two steals while allowing five goals. Freshman Alex Wolf came in relief and played the final 7:22 of the fourth period, registering one save while allowing one goal. Kirk Wilenius started in the cage for LMU, going the distance for 14 saves while allowing 13 goals.
UCLA went 3-for-8 on power plays while LMU went 0-for-4. The Bruins went 0-for-1 on penalty shots while the Lions didn't attempt one.
The Bruins will return to action next weekend as the No. 1 seed at the Kap7 SoCal Invitational at Pepperdine and LMU. UCLA will take on Pomona-Pitzer at 8:00 a.m. in the first round on Oct. 10 in Malibu, Calif.
