UCLA won the doubles point for the ninth time in 12 matches this year on Saturday, taking victories at court Nos. 1 and 2 to earn a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. After fifth-ranked Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki took care of business at court No. 1, Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell clinched the point with at upset at the No. 2 spot, where they downed 49th-ranked Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz, 6-3.
Stanford was able to pull even shortly after singles play began, as John Morrissey downed an injured Dennis Mkrtchian, 6-3, 6-1 at court No. 2. Mkrtchian, who is ranked No. 35 nationally, took an injury timeout after dropping the first set and was never able to recover, winning just one game in the second set.
Fortunately for UCLA, three straight-set victories would soon follow and the Bruins were able to take an insurmountable 4-1 lead. After Sell (court No. 4) and McDonald (court No. 1) won at their respective courts, Redlicki clinched the win with a 7-6(7), 6-3 victory over David Wilczynski at court No. 3.
With the match already decided, freshman Austin Rapp was edged by Nolan Paige in a 10-point tiebreaker at court No. 5, and junior Ryoto Tachi battled back from dropping the first set to defeat David Hsu, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 at court No. 6.
UCLA returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Tulsa at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m.
