
No. 1 UCLA Improves to 17-1 with 17-3 Victory over CSU Bakersfield

LOS ANGELES. -- The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team (17-1, 3-0 MPSF) posted a 17-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield (12-11, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center.
Junior Kodi Hill led the Bruins with three goals as six different Bruins scored multiple goals and 10 different Bruins found the back of the net.
CSU Bakersfield struck first when Bridgette Souza scored a power play goal after Bruin goalie Sami Hill was excluded (7:09). Emily Donohoe tied it at 1-1 with a goal in the top right corner (1:17). Freshman Devin Grab gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead with a goal high corner near side (:17) to end the scoring in the first period
Junior Kodi Hill opened the scoring in the second with a low skip shot to extend the lead to 3-1 (7:03). Junior Alys Williams made it 4-1 with a counter attack score (6:34). Janelle Shelby scored on a 6-on-5 (5:30) to make it 4-2. Hill then scored her second from the front court to push the lead to 5-2 (3:50). Senior Emily Donohoe scored on a counter attack to make it 6-2 (3:14). Sophomore Ashley Zwirner got in on the scoring action to extend the lead to 7-2 (2:25). Hill then completed her hat trick with a counter attack score (1:04) to give the Bruins an 8-2 lead at the break.
Sophomore Mackenzie Barr opened the scoring in the third with a power play goal at the 7:27 mark to give the Bruins a 9-2 advantage. Junior Rachel Fattal scored a penalty goal to push the lead to 10-2 (6:47). Barr then made a nice drive and finish (6:20) to give the Bruins an 11-2 edge with her second goal of the game. Senior Danielle Ferraro scored back-to-back goals (4:17 and 1:32) to extend the Bruins' scoring streak to nine. Grab scored her second of the game to end the scoring in the third (0:29) with UCLA leading 14-2.
Katie Benson opened the scoring in the fourth for CSU Bakersfield with a power play goal (5:40) to snap UCLA's scoring streak of 10 straight goals (14-3). Zwirner then scored her second of the game for UCLA (5:14). Freshman Nicole Reynolds scored her first of the game to give UCLA a 16-3 lead (4:28). Another freshman, Elissia Schilling, ended the scoring with a one-timer with :19 remaining to provide the 17-3 final.
Sami Hill had a solid first half allowing just two power play goals while making six stops. Junior Alex Musselman played the second half in the cage for UCLA allowing one power play goal and registering one save. Brittany Tyra played the entire game in goal for CSUB and was credited with 11 saves. UCLA was just 1-for-6 on power plays and converted its only penalty shot. CSUB was 3-for-7 on power play opportunities.
The Bruins return to action on Thursday, Mar. 26 when they travel to Hawaii to face San Diego State at 9:00 p.m. (PT) and then face Hawai'i on Friday, Mar. 27 at 9:00 p.m. (PT). UCLA doesn't have a home game until April 18 against USC in the home and regular season finale.
