No. 8 UCLA Remains Undefeated with 3-2 Win Over No. 9 LMU

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked Bruins (4-0) had to stave off set and match points at multiple flights to remain undefeated on the year, defeating No. 9 Loyola Marymount (2-7) on Wednesday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Sand Volleyball Courts. With the 3-2 vitctory over the Lions, the Bruins improve to 4-2 all-time against LMU.
The UCLA No.1 doubles pair of Kamila Tan and Zoë Nightingale dropped a straight set match to Betsi Metter and Sarah Sponcil, 21-9, 21-17. The newly formed Bruin pair is now 1-1 on the year.
At #2 doubles, the Bruins' Elise Zappia and Madie Smith defeated LMU's Taylor Akana and Litara Keil in a three-set thriller, 16-21, 22-20, 16-14. The Bruin duo improves to 6-2 on the season.
Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver won a tightly contested match, 24-22, 14-21, 16-14 at No. 3 doubles over LMU's Anne Marie Taylor and Avery Bush. The Bruin tandem is now 4-0 in 2015.
At #4 doubles, Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye lost their first match of the year to the Lions' team of Hannah Tedrow and Rachelle Suaava (21-15, 19-21, 9-15). The Bruin pair is now 3-1 on the year.
At #5 doubles, the Bruins' Ivey Schmitt and Anastasia Kunz posted a hard-fought three-set victory (21-10, 16-21, 15-5) win over LMU's tandem of Kristen Castellanos and Taylor Scioscia. The Bruin tandem is now 2-0 on the year and clinched the team win for UCLA today.
In an exhibition match, UCLA's Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Kendahl Hettick had no problem with LMU's Lindsay Carr and Nicky Kevorken, winning in straight sets (21-13, 21-5). The Bruin duo is 2-0 in exhibition play.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, April 4, when they travel to Long Beach, Calif., to face No. 19 CSU Bakersfield at 11:00 a.m. and then at No. 5 Long Beach State at 3:00 p.m.
