No. 6 Long Beach State Thwarts No. 8 UCLA's Upset Bid, 3-2

LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked Long Beach State 49ers (11-4) thwarted eighth-ranked UCLA's (8-2) upset bid on "Senior Day"on Wednesday afternoon with a 3-2 come-from-behind win at the Sunset Canyon Sand Volleyball Courts. The Bruins are now 0-4 all-time against the 49ers. LBSU sweeps the season series after deafting UCLA 5-0 on April 4 in Long Beach, Calif.
At #2 doubles, the Bruins' Elise Zappia and Madie Smith won a tightly contested two-set match over the 49ers' Tyler Jackson and Anete Brinke, 21-18, 21-19 to improve to 13-4 on the season.
Then the Bruins' Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye at No. 4 doubles put UCLA up 2-0, rallying to defeat LBSU's Ciana Wagner and Andrea McHugh in three sets, 12-21, 21-17, 15-6. The Bruin pair is now 11-2 on the year.
At No. 1 doubles, Long Beach State's Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac rallied to score LBSU's first point, defeating UCLA's Kamila Tan and Zoë Nightingale, 14-21, 21-19, 15-8. The Bruin pair is now 7-3 on the year.
UCLA looked to seal their first win over LBSU in four tries, when at the No. 3 flight, Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver had two match points against the 49ers' Bre Mackie and Jenelle Hudson. But Mackie and Hudson, down 14-12 in the third, reeled off four straight points to tie up the dual at 2-2, winning 17-21, 21-11, 16-14. The Bruin duo is now 7-4 on the year.
The No. 5 flight became the "winner takes it all" spot. LBSU's Rachel Nieto and Sammee Thomas defeted the Bruins' Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Ivey Schmitt in straight sets, 24-22, 21-16 to complete the comeback for the 49ers. The Bruin duo is now 5-1 on the season.
In an exhibition match, the 49ers' Lindsey Lawmaster and Morea Wagner posted a straight-set victory over the Bruins' Kendahl Hettick and Anastasia Kunz, 21-19, 21-15. The Bruin pair is 1-2 on the year.
The Bruins return to action this weekend at the Pac-12 Team Invitational at Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House. Second-seeded UCLA will take on third-seeded Arizona in the morning (tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. with #4 Arizona State vs. #5 California) on April 18.
