Top-Ranked Bruins Drown Sun Devils, 11-5

April 04, 2015 | Women's Water Polo

The No. 1 ranked UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 7 Arizona State 11-5 Saturday afternoon in Tempe, AZ.

The Bruins (20-1, 4-0), were sparked by junior All-America Rachel Fattal's first half hat trick, a five-goal third period and consistent defense in winning their 20th game. Head Coach Brandon Brooks has guided the Bruins to at least 20 wins in each of his six seasons. Arizona State fell to 16-7, 2-3.

Fattal's third goal at 3:05 of the second period gave the Bruins a 5-2 lead, which they kept padding. A goal by sophomore Ashley Zwirner and one by freshman Devin Grab completed a 5-0 UCLA run that began in the second quarter.

After ASU's Petra Pardi scored at 4:48 of the third to cut the home team's deficit to 7-3, UCLA's Danielle Faerraro and Zwirner answered to make the score 9-3. ASU's Izabella Chiappini scored at 1:31 to stop the bleeding, but goals by junior Alys Williams and freshman Devin Grab gave the Bruins a seven goal margin, 11-4.

Chiappini scored her second goal in the fourth quarter to provide the final result, 11-5.

UCLA goalkeeper Sami made 11 saves for the Bruins. ASU's E.B. Keeve, the MPSF's saves leader, made 13 for the Sun Devils.

UCLA travels to Stanford on Apr. 11 for its next conference game in a showdown between the nation's top two teams.
