
Valder?s Ace Vaults UCLA Back into Contention at NCAA Championships

Play was halted at 6:28 p.m. EDT Sunday with several teams still on the course. The top 15 will advance to the final round on Monday, and then the field will be pared to eight teams for match play.
The Bruins finished the day tied for eighth with Georgia Tech at 14-over par 878. Their round of 280 (-8) was the best of the day. Georgia (+1), USC, (+4) and Illinois (+7) were still on the course, but leading the field. Tied with Illinois in third place was LSU at 871, followed by fifth-place Vanderbilt at 8-over par 872. Texas was sixth at 12-over par, followed by South Florida at 877 (+13).
Valder's ace came at the par 3, 222-yard 14th hole. He also added four birdies and two bogeys for a solid 68 (-4). He climbed into a tie for 17th place at 217 (+1). Junior Jonathan Garrick atoned for a disastrous second round score of 84 (+12) with a 68 (-4) on Sunday, in which he recorded an eagle at the 580-yard par 5 third hole. He also added five birdies and three bogeys and was tied for 82nd at 10-over par 226. Senior Manav Shah also posted a subpar score, signing for a 71 (-1). He was tied for 74th at 9-over par 225. Junior Jake Knapp was one-over par with a 73 and moved into a tie for 23rd with a 218 (+2). Finally, junior Lorens Chan had the drop score of 74 (+2) and was tied for 95th at 229 (+13).
SMU's Bryson Dechambeau continued to lead the field at 7-under 209, following a round of 72 (E) in the third round.
