No. 1 UCLA Crushes Chapman, 24-3

STANFORD, Calif., -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 6-0 on the year with a 24-3 win over Chapman (2-3) in the first round of the Kap7 NorCal Invitational on Saturday morning at Stanford's Belardi Pool.

Freshman Spencer Farrar scored a career-high five goals and sophomore James Robinson and junior Ryder Roberts each tallied four goals in the win.

The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 advantage and were never threatened. Roberts scored the first two of his goals on a power play (7:43) and a counter attack (7:09) to get the Bruins off to a quick start. Sophomore Max irving made it 3-0 with a goal from the front court (5:36). After a power play goal by Chapman's Willis Allen (4:56), UCLA responded with three more goals to end the first with a 6-1 lead. UCLA received goals from senior Anthony Daboub (front court, 3:05), sophomore Jack Grover (counter attack, 1:51) and Robinson (counter attack, 1:18).

UCLA won the second period 6-1 as well to build a 12-2 lead by halftime. Chapman's Jeff O'Brien scored the first goal of the second on a 6-on-5 opportunity (7:22) to make it 6-2. But UCLA ended the period with six straight goals, which began with front court scores from Farrar (5:46) and redshirt freshman Austin Rone (5:05). Rone scored his second goal on a power play (3:43) and then Roberts (power play, 1:46) and Robinson (front court, 0:38) tacked on another goal. Junior Alec Zwaneveld scored from two meters with one second remaining to end the first half scoring.

The Bruins opened the third with four straight goals to make it 10 unanswered to build a 16-2 advantage. Roberts scored his fourth on a power play (7:05) and then sophomore Alex Roelse scored his first on a penalty shot (4:43). Freshman Max Staresinic scored his first of the match on a counter (2:52) and Farrar added his second by converting a penalty shot (:54). Chapman scored its third power play goal (0:26) to end the period with UCLA leading 16-3.

UCLA dominated the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 8-0. Staresinic completed a hat trick with a nice score off a drive (7:41) and then a goal from the front court (6:00). Farrar completed a hat trick with a penalty conversion (6:56) and then tacked on two counter scores (2:53, 2:20) to post his five goals. Zwaneveld added a counter attack strike for his second goal of the match (4:50) and Robinson added two counter scores (3:35, 1:39) to tie his career-high with four goals.

Freshman Alex Wolf got the start and played the entire match, registering a season-high 10 saves while allowing three power play goals. He was also credited with three steals and two assists. Stephen Neil played the first three periods in the cage for Chapman, making three saves. Ian Decker played the fourth and registered one stop.

UCLA went 4-for-7 on power plays while Chapman went 3-for-9. The Bruins were 3-for-3 on penalty shots while Chapman did not attempt one.

The Bruins will take on ninth-seeded Pepperdine at 3:25 p.m. today in the quarterfinals. The Waves advanced with a 12-11 win over eighth-seeded UC Davis in the first round.
