LOS ANGELES, Calif.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 17-0 on the year with a 17-4ย victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-10) in a non-conferenceย game at Spieker Aquatics Centerย on Saturday afternoon.ย The win tied UCLA's all-time record of 50 consecutive victories, established from 1964-68. The Bruins will have a chance to break theย record and tie the all-time NCAA record of 51 (Stanford, 1985-87) at No. 4 Pacific on Oct. 8.
Senior Joey Fuentes and redshirt freshman Eric Goldenbergย led the Bruins with three goals apiece. Junior Aleksandar Ruzic started in goal for theย Bruins, recording four five while allowing two goalsย in the first half. Redshirt freshman Jonathan Van De Veldeย came on in relief in the second half, registering five saves while also allowing two goals.
Sophomore Warren Snyder got things started with a bar-in goal at the 6:06 mark of the opening period. Junior Matt Farmer made it 2-0 with a goal at two meters (5:20). Snyder scored his second on a counter attack (4:43) to push the lead to 3-0. Ethan Lewis got the Stags on the board with a back-hander to cut the lead to 3-1 (3:38). UCLA got back-to-back power play goals from Goldenberg (2:26) and Fuentes (1:34). Freshman James Vlachonassios ended the scoring in the first with a cross-cage counter score (0:55) to make it 6-1 UCLA.
Matt Daruty opened the scoring in the second with a power play goal (4:25) to cut the lead to 6-2. But sophomore David Stiling answered off a nice feed from senior Alec Zwaneveld (4:35) to push the lead to 7-2. Fuentes added his second goal on a power play (3:51) and Goldenberg added his second on a penalty shot that was drawn by senior Patrick Woepse (2:59) and the Bruins were off and running. Fuentes completed his hat trick with a goal from distance (1:22) to extend the lead to 10-2. Junior James Robinson ended the scoring in the first half with a goal from the front court (0:43), giving UCLA an 11-2 advantage at the break.
Freshman Jake Simpson opened things up in the third with a power play goal (6:20) to push the lead to 12-2. Goldenberg completed his hat trick with a goal from the front court (5:37) and sophomore Austin Rone added a cross-cage strike to end the scoring in the third (1:22) with the Bruins leading 14-2.
Graham Fullerton scored on a cross-cage shot (6:16) to opoen the scoring in the fourth. But junior Max Irving added a counter attack strike (5:22) and sophomore Kent Inoue scored from the front court (3:12) to make it 16-3. Arya Nakhjavani scored a power play goal off a rebound from the crossbar (2:21) to cut the lead to 16-4. Senior Patrick Woepse ended the scoring with a goal at set (2:06) to provide the 17-4 final.
