LOS ANGELES, Calif.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins never trailed against San Jose State and started seven of their nine seniors on "Senior Day" in a 10-3 win over the Spartansย on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center. With the win, UCLA improved to 23-0 overall and extended its winning streak to 56ย in a row.
A trio of Bruins led UCLA in scoring as senior Ryder Roberts, senior Alec Zwaneveld and sophomore Warren Snyder each scored two goals. Senior Garrett Danner started in the cage for UCLA, playing the first three quarters, allowing three goals while making three saves. Senior Elliot Ordwayย came on in relief in the fourth, pitching a shutout while making three stops. Conrad Gordon registered 14 stops for the Spartans while allowing 10 goals.
Senior Chancellor Ramirez opened the scoring with a counter attack goal at the 4:53 mark of the first period. SJSU's Davorย Koret tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal as Dannerย was excluded and the Spartans capitalized before the Bruins' defense could get set (3:08). Sophomore Warren Snyder gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead on a power play score (1:42) off a feed from junior Max Irving. Irving then picked up his second assist when he found senior Alec Zwaneveldย at two meters for another counter strike (0:38) to end the scoring in the first with UCLA leading 3-1.
Ben Hauschildย pulled the Spartans to within one with a goal at even strength (4:32) to cut it to 3-2. Snyder scored his second power play goal off a nice feed from sophomore David Stiling (2:47) to put UCLA up 4-2. Hauschildย scored his second of the game with a nearside skipper that cut the lead to 4-3 (1:07) at the half.
Senior Ryder Roberts pushed the lead to 5-3 with a power play goal (7:11) off a nice pass from junior Alex Roelse. Roberts then fired a bar-in cross-cage heater from seven meters out for his second scoreย to double-up the Spartans, 6-3, with 5:57 left in the third. Roelse then made it 7-3 (5:20) after he converted a penalty shot that was drawn by junior Matt Farmer. Senior Patrick Fellner made it 8-3 with a power play goal off a feed from Irving (2:54). Zwaneveld scored his second of the game on a counter off a feed from Snyder (1:31) to make it 9-3.
Sophomore Austin Rone got a steal and a breakaway goal for the only score inย the fourth (3:38), providing the 10-3 final.
The Bruins return to action later today when they hostย Whittier (5:00 p.m.) to conclude the double-header on "Senior Day."
