NAPA, Calif. - Freshman Spencer Soosman won both of his matches on Tuesday at the Gifford Collegiate, but the Bruins dropped a 4.5-1.5 decision to Washington in the match play quarterfinals at the Silverado Resort and Spa, and currently lead a suspended match versus South Florida.
The Bruins have won three points against the Bulls on wins by Soosman, junior Tyler Collier and freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara, but dropped two matches. The lone remaining match on the course features sophomore Cole Madey, who has a 1-up lead over Claudio Correa with two holes to play. Madey will need to win or halve either of the final two holes to win the match. Madey hasn't trailed against Correa, winning his first hole, the 10th. Correa came back with a win on #11, and after six halves, Madey claimed #18. The Bruin sophomore also won the second, with Correa taking the fourth. The duo finished with pars on the seventh in darkness around 5:20 p.m. Their match will resume at 7 a.m. and live scoring can be found here. The winner of the UCLA-USF match will play Colorado for fifth place, while the loser will take on Wisconsin for seventh place. Live scoring for the final rounds, which begin at 8 a.m., will be available here.
Soosman claimed his second win of the day with a 5 and 3 triumph over Cristian DiMarco. Soosman won #11, but dropped the 12th and 13th before returning to all square with a win at #16. He then won three straight holes (#17, #18, #1) to go 3-up, also taking #4 and closing out DiMarco with a victory on the sixth. Collier never trailed in his match versus Andre Leveque, winning 4 and 2. He won #11 and #12 before dropping back to all square with losses at #16 and #18. Collier then won the first four holes of the front nine. He lost the sixth, but a win on the seventh closed out Leveque.
Yoshihara went the distance against Priyanshu Singh, but won 1-up. On the back nine, Yoshihara won #11, #12, #17 and #18, while dropping #13, #14 and #15 to take a 1-up lead to the front side. Singh won #1, but Yoshihara came back with one at the second. Singh won #5, but again Yoshihara bounced back with a win at the sixth, as the remaining three holes were halved to give the Bruins a third point. Sophomores Patrick Murphy and Matt Hutchins never led in their matches. Murphy fell 3 and 2 to Rigel Fernandes. Murphy won #11, #17, #18, #3 and #5, but Fernandes claimed #10, #12, #15, #16, #1, #4, #6 and #7. Hutchins was unable to win a hole in his 7 and 5 loss to Jimmy Jones.
Soosman posted the Bruins' lone full point versus Washington's Henry Lee. Again starting on the 10th, he won the first hole of the match, but dropped #11 and #12. Soosman won #14 and #18, with Lee taking #17 to be all square heading to the front side. A Soosman win on the fourth and a Lee triumph on the fifth again brought the match to all square. Soosman then birdied the eighth and the two each parred the ninth to give the Bruins the win.
Madey picked up a half point against Corey Pereira. After Pereira won #10, Madey took #13 and #14 to take his lone lead of the match. Pereira won #15 and #16 to take a 1-up lead to the second nine. Pereira also won #4, but victories on #5 and #7 by Madey squared the match, which was its final result. Collier and Murphy each went the distance, but both fell 1-up. Collier never trailed on the front nine, with wins on #12 and #16, while Frank Garber took the 15th. Garber won the first hole to make the match all square. Collier won #5, but Garber evened the match on #6, and then won the ninth to claim the point. Hutchins did not win a hole against Daniel List, falling 6 and 4.
