MVB Sweeps Lancers in Three Sets

The No. 4 men's volleyball team swept past No. 15 Cal Baptist in an MPSF match played on Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion. Scores were 25-18, 25-19, 25-13. UCLA improves to 14-3 and 10-3 on the year and will play at USC on Saturday night in a match to be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
The Bruins took control of the match early, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage to begin set one. UCLA built the gap up to 15-7 on an ace by Micah Ma'a. CBU closed to 17-13, before a Ma'a solo block and then a Ma'a - Oliver Martin block capped a run which put UCLA up 22-13. The Bruins won the set 25-18 with JT Hatch delivering the set point on a kill. UCLA hit .533 for the set.
Cal Baptist took its only lead on the night, 0-1, at the start of set two, but the Bruins tallied the next three points. UCLA led 7-3 after an Arnitz kill and a couple of aces from Hatch. CBU rallied to pull within one, at 8-7. UCLA returned to the court after a timeout and built the margin back up to 15-9. The Lancers crept as close as two, 19-17, but the tough serve of Jackson Bantle helped the Bruins to separate once again. UCLA took the set at 25-19 after a kill by Hagen Smith.
In set three, UCLA stormed out to a 6-1 lead. Following a Martin kill, the Bruins owned a 11-6 edge. Another Hatch ace made it 16-8. Christian Hessenauer came on down the stretch to produce a couple of aces for a 23-10 advantage. Michael Fisher's kill ended the match at 25-13.
Hatch (.350) and Arnitz (.278) topped UCLA with nine kills each. Davis Gillett added nine digs. Ma'a finished with two aces, seven digs, a block solo and five block assists. Mitch Stahl registered an ace to go with a block solo and six block assists. UCLA out hit the Lancers .333 to .066 (an opponent season low) and won the blocking battle 12.5 to 7.0
