No. 2 UCLA Downs No. 24 CSUB

March 20, 2016 | Women's Water Polo

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The second-ranked UCLA women's water polo team downed No. 24 CSU Bakersfield, 6-1, in the Bruins' conference opener on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, UCLA improves to 16-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

The game got off to a slow start with neither team able to find the back of the net.  The Bruins put the first point on the board with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter when India Forster drew an exclusion from CSUB's Ashley Paz and then netted a power-play goal.  Shortly after, the Roadrunners evened the score with a 6-on-5 goal of their own.  This would be the last time CSUB put one past a UCLA goalkeeper.

Elissia Schilling snuck one by CSUB's Courtney Wahlstrom to close out the first quarter with a 2-1 Bruin lead.  In the second quarter, Lizette Rozeboom tallied UCLA's lone goal.  The score at half was 3-1.

The Bruins returned to the pool firing on all cylinders, as Devin Grab, Forster, and Alexa Tielmann each notched a goal.  The fourth quarter was a defensive battle with both teams holding the other scoreless.  As time expired, UCLA held a 6-1 advantage.

In the cage, Alex Musselman and Carlee Kapana split time.  Musselman recorded three saves in the first half, while Kapana stopped six in the second half.

Next up, the Bruins continue conference play when they face No. 8 California in the Bay Area.  The match takes place at 5 p.m. on Friday at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex.
