GULF SHORES, Ala., -- Fourth-seeded UCLA (19-7) dropped its third consecutive match and was relegated to the contender's bracket following a 3-0 defeat to fifth-seeded Hawai'i (17-8) in the First Round of the 2016 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship on Friday morning at Gulf Place Beach.
The Bruins will face No. 8 Stetson, which lost 3-0 to No. 1 Florida State in the first match of the day in this inaugural Championship. UCLA posted a 3-2 win at Stetson earlier this year during its Spring Break trip to Florida.
Hawai'i took an early 1-0 lead in the match as Ginger Long and Mikayla Tucker defeated Izzy Carey and Elise Zappia, 22-20, 21-14, at court three.
The Rainbow Wahine went up 2-0 several minutes later when Hannah Rooks and Ari Homayun narrowly defeated UCLA's Julie Consani and Reily Buechler, 21-18, 21-18 on court five.
Hawai'i clinched the match on court two when Nikki Taylor and Ka'iwi Schucht defeated Ivey Schmitt and Kamila Tan, 21-11, 22-20. The UCLA pair fended off two match points, with blocks on Schucht and Taylor, to tie the score at 20 before Taylor's ace gave the SandBows the victory.
UCLA's freshman duo of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara posted a set one win on court one and Zana Muno and Jessyka Ngauamo did the same on court four prior to the match stoppage.
